well worn thoughts

Things
There are worse things than having behaved foolishly in public.
There are worse things than these miniature betrayals,
committed or endured or suspected; there are worse things
than not being able to sleep for thinking about them.
It is 5 a.m. All the worse things come stalking in
and stand icily about the bed looking worse and worse
and worse.

These are the times when my thoughts tumble like crazy black birds through my nights, where I wonder if all our efforts are always worth the prize we pay,
these are the times of small betrayals but also the thankfulness for the stable presence of those dearest ones around us.
The stairs are leading up to our loft, worn out from hundreds of years of heavy and light feet climbing those steps, of leaving traces, and thus slowly wearing them down.
When I feel worn, deflated, out of breath and out of everything, I look at them and think: Hang on Kiki; they are still holding on after so many years, worse for wear but still carrying every weight and most importantly: Still going UP!
Never mind for being foolish though! Nothing to be afraid of…. once you have lived in the wonderful laid-back South West of England (Devon), you know a thing or two about behaving foolishly in public. I enjoy it now…. and I miss it sometimes
